PAST
JOC EVENTS
Sunday, June 11
BRACE MOUNTAIN HIKE
"Moshe's First Hike of the Year" hike was a success - there
were no casualties and it didn't rain (guess which one makes it more of a
success). The day did start off a little cloudy (and late) but the sky
cleared up after lunch and we were blessed with the beautiful sunshine
for the second half our hike (queue Beethoven's 6th).
Highlights included hiking to the tops
of three mountain (South Brace Mt., Brace Mt. and Mt. Frissell) in four
states (NY, CT, MA and Confusion). Woo hoo! -Moshe

HORSEBACK RIDING PLUS
40 JOCers didn't let a little heat stroke stop them from horsing around
at the Malibu Dude Ranch on June 18th. While we may not have been
galloping at full speed on our horses we did manage to get speeding
tickets on the way to the event. During the day some of us took aim at
the rifle range, while other practiced for Wimbleton on the tennis courts
and then there were the smart ones who cooled off in the pool. The day
ended with a BBQ by the lake where the burgers and dogs were grilled to
perfection by Richard & Steven. As the horses headed out to the
corral we reluctantly made our way back to the city. Till next time :) -

MOUNTAIN BIKING
Nine JOCers enjoyed a beautiful morning biking the trails in Ringwood
State Park. The going was sometimes hilly, always rocky, and my bum is
still recovering. Looking forward to doing it again!

Sunday, June 18-19
CATSKILL BACKPACKING
6 JOCers were happy campers as we enjoyed 2 days of hiking and an overnight
stay at the Balsam Lake Mountain lean-to in the Catskills. It was hot and
humid, and we were feasted upon by every biting insect known to science
(and perhaps a few yet to be discovered), but there is still nothing
better than waking up in the woods breathing the fresh mountain air!

WHITEWATER RAFTING
Call it retribution from the less than stellar Housatonic experience in
April...This past Sunday, some whitewater-crazy JOCers trekked out to
Charlemont, Massachusetts for a run on the Dryway section of the
Deerfield River. Though the drive to and fro was grey and rainy, we were
graced with sun and warmer weather from the moment we checked in till the
moment we reached the end of the river. Despite a few jumpier rapids, we
had no unintentional swimmers, and a good time was had by all in the
"80 degree water." -Maurie

"I DO'S FOR JEWS" :
Getting Engaged
in the Outdoors
By Alon Krausz, Reprinted from the
Blueprint
If you are happily married, skip this
article. However, for you single men out there, this information could
make the difference between her saying “yes- I will!” and “Go take a
hike”, er, unless you are already on one. As for the ladies, if you like
the ideas below, you will certainly find a not-so-subtle way to let your
husband-to-be know your wishes.
Proposing in the outdoors is surely one
of the most romantic ways to ask your soulmate’s hand in marriage. Where
else but in G-d’s country should one embark on this most meaningful and
spiritual journey? I therefore offer the three suggestions for how to get
engaged in the outdoors the New York City vicinity. And, hey – if she
says “no”, you can always run off and tell her to find her own way back.
Engagement Rock: There is a reason why this beautiful overlook
opposite Bear Mountain is called Engagement Rock. Can you guess what it
is? Seriously, after a short 1 hour hike up from the east side of the
Bear Mountain Bridge along the world famous Appalchian Trail, a stunning
view is a nice complement to the stunning ring (for the stunning lady).
Follow the white trail there and back if you are without a map, or make a
loop if you have the Harriman State Park trail maps, available at most
outdoors stores, such as REI or EMS.
Bonus points: Put the ring in the gorp.
Tory Cave: Nothin says lovin’ like taking her spelunkin’. For
the adventurous, a few hours in Tory Cave in New Milford, Connecticut
provides the fun, and the solitude for just the right moment. One need
not be experienced to enter Tory - just bring flashlights with lots of
spare batteries, and explore away! Directions to the cave can be found at
http://www.berkshirehiking.com/hikes/torys_cave.html . A nice place to
propose is in The Chamber, a small room in the cave with a high ceiling.
With water dripping around you, you kinda feel like your’e at the bottom
of the well from the scene in The Goonies. Another possibility is to pop
the question while exploring the birth canal. (That would be a part of
the cave).
Bonus points: Turn off all your flashlights and
experience total darkness. Explain how that was your life before you met
her, or something beautifully corny like that. Then propose.
Skydiving at Sky’s The Limit: After plopping down thousands of dinar for the
ring, surely another $400 to make the proposal memorable is no big deal,
right? Now, before you do this, you need to find a girl who is willing to
skydive. If you must marry Jewish, then simply persuade her by telling
her how skydiving had the fewest deaths of any sport (don’t mention the
death rate percent, just stick to the overall numbers). Once you are at
the airfield, you’re all set. Now mind you, you will not be able to
skydive in tandem and propose in the air. That would take months of training,
and cost more that the ring itself, and even then, do you really want to
risk dropping a ring from 12,000 feet? You will, however, be able to
propose from the plane right before jumping. It is at that moment that
she is feeling the greatest appreciation for life, love, and all that is
beautiful in the world – that is- you. An affirmative response is almost
guaranteed. And if she says no...
Bonus Points: Hire people to cut out of the crops below
the words “I Love You _____” , like in the movie “Signs”. If she is a
putz, add on “Pull the Cord!”
Alon led his wife on a four hour
uphill hike in 98 degree heat before he knew she was the one and
proposed. She has never forgiven him.
