Fall Foliage Hike
Organizer:Moshe Lehmann
Organizer Email:joc_hike AT mlehmann DOT com

Good Moed one and all.
The JOC will be embarking its annual Fall Foliage Hike next Sunday, October 30, 2005. This time, we will be trying something new.

For those of you who have been with me on past hikes, you know that I like the more strenuous hikes. For this reason we will heading just north of Cold Spring, NY and will be hiking Breakneck Ridge to the South Beacon Tower - a distance of 4.4 miles. If you've never been there, here are some description excerpts from the New York Walk Book;

"The most rugged and scenic of the park trails...The steep climb up the ridge is dangerous in slippery weather or in high winds...begins the arduous ascent of the ridge...a near-vertical rock outcrop comes into view, indicating that the climb is far from over...after a steep climb via the Devil's Ladder..."

By now I expect you all will be having the same reaction - shortness of breath and racing hearts. For a few of you it will be due to anticipation and excitement at the prospect of strolling along this trail. For the rest of you - utter and complete dread.

Here is where the "something new" comes in: Concurrently, there will be a not-as-strenuous hike to the South Beacon Tower via the Wilkinson Memorial Trail. While this 4.5 mile path is not as difficult as the Breakneck trail, it is not a walk down 5th Avenue. For one thing, there are far fewer potholes.

From the Tower, the designated lunch spot, both groups will be joining for the 3 mile Achdus hike down via the Notch Trail.

Both trips should present beautiful autumnal views of the Hudson River and surrounding area.

(I am still in need of someone to lead the Wilkinson group. If you have the hiking experience and desire, please contact me ASAP.)

Excited? Terrified? Good! Here are some more mundane details (some portions copied from previous hike announcements):

Overall Length of hike: Via Breakneck (B): 7.4 miles. Via Wilkinson (W): 7.5 miles

Difficulty of Breakneck hike: 9 - This is a very strenuous hike and should only be attempted if you are in good shape and can keep up. We will be going faster than the usual JOC rate.

Difficulty of Wilkinson hike: 6.5 - Not as rough as the other track, but still challenging. There are considerable altitude gains/losses.

Cost - $2 to be paid at the trailhead (please try to bring exact change in bills - no coins please). Also, all drivers should be compensated for their chauffeuring services. The going rate is about $9 per passenger.

Meeting Time: We will be meeting on Sunday October 30, 2005 at 8:30 AM ***Eastern Standard Time*** promptly. At that time we will begin filling the cars and sending them off. When the last car is filled, it will leave. So please be there on time (or early).

Eastern Standard Time reminder: Please remember that we will be "falling back" the night before the hike so set your sundials accordingly and take advantage of that "extra" hour of sleep.

Meeting Place: We will be meeting at our usual NYC meeting place - in front of the Bagel Basket (618 Amsterdam Ave., on the corner of 90th Street).

Location of trailhead: Just north of Cold Spring, NY, approximately an hour and a half from the UWS, in scenic Dutchess County. Directions will be sent later in the week to all registered parties.

JOC Family Hike Conflict: There is a JOC Family Hike the same day. This will not be it. If "Ring Around the Rosie" and "Duck Duck Goose" is more your speed, please contact Alon at jewishoutdoorsclub AT yahoo DOT com.

Food: Bring lunch, snacks, whatever you want/need to make it through the hike. I advise something with carbs and also something that can replenish your electrolytes (salted pretzels or nuts, Cliff Bars, etc). Be sure to have your food before 8:30 AM EST.

Water: Bring lots of water. On a previous hike that I lead, we had to cut the hike short and take the "bail out" route because too many people were dangerously low on water. For this reason I am imposing a MANDATORY water requirement. If you want to come on the hike you MUST HAVE A MINIMUM OF 2 LITERS OF WATER (approximately 64 ounces). If you do not, you will not be allowed into the cars. I am sorry I have to be so strict, but I do not want to have anyone dehydrate. I (and the JOC) am very serious about safety.

Clothes to wear: Wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirty, stained and/or possibly damaged. Plus, they should afford you the mobility and *warmth* necessary to hike with ease.

Footwear to wear: Wear comfortable "sporting" type shoes. This includes hiking boots, trail shoes, sneakers, etc.

Footwear *not* to wear: DO NOT WEAR DRESS SHOES OR PUMPS. YOU WILL BE UNCOMFORTABLE AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO COMPLETE THE HIKE. Also, open toed or backed shoes should not be worn.

Other things to bring: Camera, sunglasses, hat, sun block, insect repellant, 2-way radios, etc.

Rain policy: The hike will be canceled if it is raining on Sunday morning or rain is imminent. I will send an update towards the end of the week as to the forecasted conditions.

How to RSVP: To RSVP please respond to joc_hike AT mlehmann DOT com and send the following information:
1) Your name
2) Your phone number (Cell preferably)
3) Where you will be departing from
4) If you will be driving. If yes, how many do you have room for and will you be available to come to the NYC meeting place (please).
5) Which group you plan to join: Breakneck or Wilkinson. If you are unsure, please re-read the above descriptions and ratings.

How to RSVP for a friend: Please include all the above info for anyone you will be RSVPing for. That includes the friend's name, phone number, e-mail, departure place, if the friend will be bringing a car and trip selection.

***WARNING**** If you do not include all the necessary information, YOUR RSVP WILL BE RETURNED AND NOT ACCEPTED. I cannot effectively coordinate the numbers and transportation with missing information.

Please note: If you have already sent me an e-mail stating that you would like to RSVP, please send me another one with the necessary information.

As it is a short week with Yom Tov on Tuesday and Wednesday, do like they do in Chicago - RSVP early and often.

As always, preference will be given to those who RSVP so please don't just "show up".

Number of hikers: 25 for the Breakneck trip and 40 for the Wilkinson trip.

Drivers Needed: The hardest part of planning a hike is getting the necessary drivers to transport everyone to and from the hike. If you are able to get some form of transportation and ferry passengers, I will be most appreciative and will blow you a kiss. Especially needed are drivers from the NYC meeting place. All drivers should be compensated by their passengers about $9.

When we will be returning: We will probably not be back in the City before 5:00 PM EST - probably later. Please note that sunset will be at 4:53 PM EST on Sunday. My goal is to have everyone back at the cars by then, at the latest. Nevertheless, if you have a flashlight...

To review: Sunday October 30, 2005, 8:30 AM ***EST***, Fall Foliage Hike, Breakneck (9) or Wilkinson (6.5), $2 ($9 for drivers), no "Duck Duck Goose", Food, 2 Liters of water, proper clothes, proper shoes, RSVP with all requested info (same if RSVP for friend) or will be returned, need drivers, Back after 5:00.

If you have any questions, please re-read the above e-mail thrice and wait 5 minutes. If you still have a question, please e-mail me at joc_hike AT mlehmann DOT com.

Again, if you would like to lead the Wilkinson group and have the skills to do so, please let me know. As an added incentive, the entrance fee will be waved. Go out and buy a half a cup of Starbucks coffee on us!!!

Looking forward to seeing you there on Sunday.

Have a good Yom Tov.

Moshe Lehmann
