Hike to Getrude's Nose
A Scenic hike in the Gunks
On Sunday, August 10, JOC will head up to Minnewaska State Park to hike
ever-popular Getrude's Nose (trail, that is). The hike will take
the beautiful Awosting Falls to stunning ridge viewpoints, and finally
Minnewaska Lake where we can go for a swim. The cost of the hike is
JOC plus direct reimbursement to drivers of $8, if you need a ride.
Because of the late date, I am not collecting money in advance. If
to come, just send me an email! I am shooting for a hike of no more
people, and will therefore accept the first 70 people who email assuming
that 20 or so will oversleep after drinking a wee bit too much bad
night. Before signing up, note the early departure time!
Here are the details in Q and A:
WHERE/WHEN DO WE MEET?
We will meet at the Bagel Basket, on the SW corner of Broadway and
7:45 am. Too early? Too bad! :)
Seriously, the reason for the early rise is that the parking lot fills
Sunday mornings, and the ride there is about 2 hours long. If we don't
it to the parking lot before it fills up, we will have to hike up a
boring and terribly steep road, and I'd like to try to avoid that.
you think this is, a hike?)
HOW DIFFICULT IS THE HIKE?
The hike is a easy-moderate one. It is about 4 hours
of hiking, plus
lunch and swim time. There isn't that much elevation change, and some
hiking is on wide carraigeways. Still, there are ample opportunities
rock scrambling for those looking for more challenging stuff. You will
lots of company :) .
A good description of the hike can be found at
WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
Bring 2 liters of water, camera, sunscreen, bug spray, bathing suit,
lunch and money. A hat is a
good idea since much of the hike is not in the shade.
WHAT DOES IT COST?
The hike costs $2 plus $8 for drivers. I am not
collecting in advance.
HOW DO I SIGN UP?
Send me an email with the following info:
A) What is your name?
B) Do you have a car?
C) Volunteer to carry a 22 or 26 lb girl on your back? (yes, the plan
again is for the little ladies to join)
IS THERE A LIMIT?
As I wrote earlier, I will take the first 70 to
sign up, so we can have
a hike of about 50.
Priority will be given to drivers as needed.
Directions will come by email next week. The last 10 spots will
be reserved for new JOCers hiking for the first time
with our group.
HIKE IS LIGHT RAIN OR SHINE. In the event of heavy rain, it will be
cancelled, as this hike was about 2 months ago :( .
Check emails last minute for updates.
Hope you'll join us!
