Arches and Canyonlands JOC trip!

This August 15-22, the Jewish Outdoors Club will be heading out West to
Utah, for an unforgettable weeklong adventure in two of the most
magnificent
National Parks in the US- Arches and Canyonlands. Yay! This trip has been
many
months in the making, and is a worthy sequel to the incredible (just ask the
participants) 'Utah I' of 2001, which took 18 JOCers to the Canyons of
Escalante (pictures on JOC website).

In the parks of Southeast Utah, we will be hiking, rafting, biking and
canyoneering our way around, seeing and experiencing all that this stunning
landscape has to offer. In typical JOC fashion, we will be getting "down
and dirty" with rigorous hikes, zany adventures, and jam packed days. Forget
malls and museums --
This is an outdoors adventure, designed to experience G-d's awesome
creations with awesome people.
One need not be "Super fit",  but attendees should be in at least fair
shape, or else be real troopers.
I have enclosed pictures of some of the terrain that we will be exploring.
Check them out!

Like 'Utah I' , this is not a "formal" trip with 5 star lodging and gourmet
chefs.  Instead, we will all stay in a simple, but nice lodge in Moab,
Utah, where, in the JOC spirit of community and camaraderie, we will share
responsibilities, such as cooking and cleaning, and sometimes even driving.
This allows me to keep the cost really low  -- only $825 if paid before May
15 ($875 after) which
includes everything except your flight there, (which will run you a couple
of hundred more). Compare that to any other
outfitter out there, and you will see that this is less than half the price
of Kosher (and even non-Kosher) trips of the same duration. Five
percent of all total revenues goes to the Halachik Organ Donor Society,
(www.hods.org).

Those who come on this trip are sure to have an incredible time, and
the memories and friendships will last a lifetime.

Here is the itinerary for the trip.

Sunday Aug 15: Arrive at Grand Junction, CO airport, depart airport
mid-afternoon. Arrive in Moab. Surreal sunset hike to Delicate Arch, the
world's most famous natural arch (and seen on every Utah license plate).

Monday Aug 16: All day hike in Devils Garden in Arches National Park.
Explore 8 arches, and other-worldy rock formations and terrain.

Tuesday Aug 17: Canyoneering in Medieval Chamber with professional guides.
Two 100 ft rappels take you to the canyon floor, where refreshing pools and
a huge arch await exploration and hiking.
Following that, we will embark on a stunning 2 mile hike to Fisher Towers.

Wednesday Aug 18: All day Whitewater Rafting the Westwater Canyon. This is
a
beautiful canyon of serene solitude surrounded by red sandstone spires.
Contains class II-IV rapids. Opportunity for 40 foot cliff jump.

Thursday Aug 19: Hike in the Chesler Park Area of the Needles District of
Canyonlands. Hike along multi-colored spires called hoodoos, slickrock
mesas, and narrow canyons. Evening drive to Island in the Sky to Grand View
Point overlooking
the Colorado River.

Friday Aug 20: Professionally guided hike into Fiery Furnace, a maze of
narrow canyons
created by tall, red sandstone fins, containing hidden arches and bridges
and narrow passageways, and considered
the wildest and most exquisite part of Arches

Shabbat: At the Lodge.

Sunday: Mountain Bike on the Gemini Bridges Trail, a beginner's
slickrock trail near Moab. Stunning views along the way of Arches National
Park with a picturesque backdrop of the La Sal Mountains and the Colorado
River corridor.
Drive back to Grand Junction, arrive at airport at 2:00 pm.

Other trip detours may include Monument Valley, and Dead Horse State Park.

IS THERE A SPACE LIMIT?
I can take 16 people on the trip. The last JOC Utah trip filled up. and
people were turned away.

HOW DO I EXPRESS INTEREST?

A) Shoot me an email stating that you are interested. I will be happy to
answer any questions you have, and keep you up to date. This will also give
me an idea of the numbers I can expect.
B) Submit for the days off in August -- do it now -- those dates are
popular! (unless you are a teacher like me- then no worries :)  )

When you are ready to commit, (scary word!):
Send a deposit. I'll need a 50% deposit to reserve your spot, which is
fully refundable until June 15. After that, until July 15, I can refund it
minus
$100.
If you can send the 50% deposit before May 15, the price is $825, not $875.
Best is to pay by check to Alon Krausz at 508 Wyndham rd, Teaneck, NJ
07666.

WHAT THEN?
Once you are signed up, you will get updates that include a packing list, a
menu, who's coming list, and other tidbits of info. fun fun fun!

Hope you can join!
